The Iran war is “supercharging” the world’s shift to renewable energy, as countries scramble to reduce their exposure to volatile oil and \u200bgas markets, the U.N. climate secretary said on Thursday.<\/div>\n
The U.S.-Israeli war \u200cwith Iran has upended oil and gas supplies, prompting some countries to\u00a0ration fuel<\/a>\u00a0and others to\u00a0roll out subsidies<\/a>\u00a0and tax cuts to shield consumers from surging prices.<\/div>\n
Early signs indicate the \u200bwar, which began two months ago, is speeding up some countries’ low-carbon \u200btransition.<\/div>\n

Demand for rooftop solar systems across Europe\u00a0has surged<\/a>, while countries \u2060including\u00a0Pakistan\u00a0<\/a>have reported a jump in electric vehicle sales.<\/div>\n
Chinese President Xi Jinping\u00a0called this month<\/a>\u00a0\u200bto speed up the construction of a new energy system to safeguard energy \u200bsecurity, emphasising hydropower development and the expansion of nuclear power.<\/div>\n
“Those who\u2019ve fought to keep the world hooked on fossil fuels are inadvertently supercharging the global renewables boom,” said Simon Stiell, Executive \u200bSecretary of the U.N.’s climate secretariat UNFCCC.<\/div>\n

“Renewables offer safer, cheaper, cleaner energy \u200bthat can\u2019t be held captive by narrow shipping straits, or global conflicts,” Stiell told a meeting \u200cof \u2060government officials at the International Energy Agency in Paris.<\/div>\n
However, the war has also prompted some nations to increase the use of highly polluting\u00a0coal<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0furnace oil-based<\/a>\u00a0power generation as they struggle to replace gas from the Middle East.<\/div>\n

Turkey’s Climate Minister \u200bMurat Kurum – who will \u200bpreside over the \u2060U.N.’s COP31 climate summit this year – said fossil fuel dependency now topped the global political agenda.<\/div>\n
“The best way to protect \u200bcitizens from the violent convulsions of global energy markets is \u200bto accelerate \u2060the clean-energy transition,” he said in a statement after the IEA event.<\/div>\n
Around 60 governments including Brazil, Germany, Canada and Nigeria, met in Colombia this week for a\u00a0summit\u00a0<\/a>to \u2060discuss how \u200bto phase out fossil fuels.<\/div>\n
